But after two days at sea, and a year of anticipation, I was mesmerized when we first caught sight of a few rocks off Elephant Island through the thick fog – harbingers of our imminent arrival on the fabled White Continent. We received a total of 1177 entries into our Instagram contest, and with such incredible photos as entries, it made it very difficult to choose the winners! Having said that, these photos caught my eye, and won their photographer a copy of Summits & Starlight: The Canadian Rockies. Our Grand Prize winner will receive a print of Fang in the Mist.

The Sentinel – Auroras at Lake Minnewanka

I haven’t been this excited about a photo in a long time. When this shot was taken I was perhaps not the most thrilled photographer. It was the second night in a week that I went chasing the auroras all night and they were hidden somewhere behind a veil of clouds (as you can tell from the surreal sky) even though the rest of the country seemed to be seeing them. It turns out that I was completely unaware that I was taking one of my most memorable shots.
