It's the most exciting time of winter besides Christmas: ice cave season! Looking forward to many days out there scouring the edges of our locals glaciers to see what's in store this year! Happy exploring everyone!
Dreaming of nights like this... 🤩 The solar maximum can't come son enough, so we can once again experience the aurora painting broad strokes above the mountains. Pure magic over Mount Rundle, Banff National Park.
Wishing you goodnight from sleeping Moraine Lake, Banff. 🙂✨
Quick "hello" from the middle of the Mediterranean! We explored the rugged Gozo coastline yesterday, and we loved it so much that we decided to relocate there until our return to Canada in a few days. This is a self-portrait I took in the incredible Xlendi area. I look forward to revisiting at night and sharing a few images! #Malta #FamilyTime
WORKSHOP GALORE! Howdy everyone! Several of you reached out privately about workshop availability, so here's a roundup of current openings! Bhutan: 3 spots (May 2020) Easter Island: 3 spots (March 2020) Botswana: 2 spots (November 2020) Mongolia: 1 spot (June 2021) Day for Night - PEI: 3 spots (June 2020) Portraits in High Places - Banff: 2 spots (October 2020) The Art of Storytelling - Kananaskis: a handful of spots (October 2020) Also, Faroes 2021 and Azores 2021 to be announced soon! So excited to explore and shoot alongside so many of you over the next 18 months! Send me a private message if you're interested or have any questions!
Parks Canada recently estimated that the Bow Valley wolf pack consists of 7 animals. The good news is that among those is a breeding pair. Let's hope they stay healthy. 🙂 This was a particularly memorable moment for me with those beautiful animals. I was out on the aurora chase and had a journalist accompanying me that night. Unfortunately the northern lights never materialized, but we quickly forgot about that when we were then treated to this magical encounter at Vermilion Lakes. One of the wolves paused for a moment in the light of the full moon and looked in our general direction. I cranked up the ISO to 6400 on my trusty Canon 5D2 and snapped one image before the wolf carried on beneath the snowy slopes of Mount Rundle. Hope you like the odd story behind the images - I'll try to share them when I find the time!
Mighty Mount Assiniboine briefly emerges out of the clouds after days of getting battered by snowstorms. Looking forward to shooting this angle again from @assiniboinelodge in March. I'll be doing a talk as well - hope to see some of you there this winter!
A few favorite images of a fascinating optical phenomenon oddly called "Steve". My first encounter with the aurora-associated structure was back around 2012. A few of us aurora chasers were completely puzzled by the purplish, static ribbon occasionally appearing perpendicularly to the green auroral oval and often dismissed it as a contrail. Since then, scientists have taken interest and have even created a backronym for the phenomenon: Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. Watch for Steve in your local mid-latitude skies!
A monochrome rendition of the mind-bending methane bubbles of Vermilion Lakes. Even as flattened photographs, they retain a peculiar 3D feel. Have a great week everyone and feel free to share.
