A shot taken on Lyell 1, in the coldest August temperature one is likely to find anywhere in the Rockies! However clear skies high up offer many rewards to the mountaineer, such as rising above the clouds and witnessing the sky go from dark overhead to pink straight ahead… to dark again on the horizon. It is the shadow of the Earth that casts a dark purple band low just above the peaks, and adds to the magic of mountaineering. Rudolph Peak, Lyells, Banff National Park.
