2AM at Lyell Hut
This image was taken on a recent trip to the Lyells. This magnificent group of high peaks had been traditionally reached from the Icefields Parkway via Glacier Lake. However, with the building of the Lyell Hut two years ago, it is safe to say that an increasing number of parties will instead make the rough drive along Bush Arm and approach from the West.
The hut is undoubtedly one of the most spectacularly located in the Canadian Rockies, as it is surrounded by ice in all directions and offers unparalleled views of mighty Mount Forbes across the valley.
This was taken on our second morning at the hut, just before we set off for the Lyells traverse. I simply set up the composition on a tripod outside and had the camera shoot several 30 second exposures while we had breakfast inside and packed for the day. Today’s photo was my favourite one of the set.
