Peyto Lake Aurora
This was taken during a recent workshop I led with fellow photographer Anne Strickland. We had just finished shooting an apocalyptic sunset at Herbert Lake last Friday and upon returning to our vehicles we could see green daggers to the north even though the sky was far from black. I suggested we head up to the closest location I could think of that offers wide open views to the north – the Peyto Lake viewing platform (the challenge with aurora photography in the Rockies is that the mountains, although providing fantastic silhouetted skylines, often prevent a clear view of the lights). I was busy giving everyone a hand getting their own pictures (they got the GOOD shots!) so this is all I brought home. Enough for a reminder of one of the most magical nights I have ever spent in the mountains. Peyto Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
2 minutes’ worth of exposure at ISO 3200 (hence the softness!) on my Canon 5D, 17.0 mm.
